Statement by Assemblyman Gary D. Finch (R,C –Springport)

Today marks a significant victory for the people of New York with the news that Governor Spitzer has conceded his plan to issue state driver’s licenses to illegal aliens.  This is a victory for our democracy and the millions of New Yorkers who overwhelmingly opposed the plan.  It would have jeopardized public safety and violated state law.  From the beginning I have opposed the governor’s plan and fought against it within the Assembly Chamber.  Though the voice of the people was heard today, it is unfortunate that several weeks and dismal poll numbers are what finally made the governor acknowledge the legitimate concerns of the people and realize his unilateral actions were wrong.
